First light

First Light is part of the Elements cycle, devoted to the natural elements and the senses. The paper’s colour is intended to evoke the element of fire. Its soft pink hue recalls the light of dawn and may also suggest the warmth of the sun touching the skin; combined with the paper’s fleshy texture, it can be associated with skin, the locus of the sense of touch. The work opened the exhibition Elements—first, because dawn heralds a beginning, and second, because touch is our earliest sense. I transformed the observation of the paper’s spontaneous arrangement into a meaningful form: a visual metaphor of light awakening to life, light that seeks to unfold.
