SCENT

Scent is composed of small paper-cut objects that recall the forest floor, strewn with needles and fallen leaves. Associated with the element of earth, Scent presents the natural cycle of life and decay. Colours evoking dry pine needles and mould suggest the gradual fading of green, the leaching of minerals, and decomposition. Disintegration in this work may as well be said to be unfolding from more complex forms toward more basic ones: circles, cones, and half-cylinders. The object itself emits no scent; instead, the sense of smell is activated through memory, evoked by word, colour, shape, and texture. The work’s ephemeral structure conveys the transience intrinsic to biological life.
